Ah, Liza Minnelli in Cabaret. One of the greatest examples of miscasting in the history of movies. You see, the character of Sally Bowles, at least as written, is one of those delusional early episode American Idol types, the ones who believe with all their hearts they are stars but can’t deliver. On Broadway Jill Haworth defined her faithfully because she was an actor, not a singer.
Then along comes Liza, world-class singer, dancer and actor. Her performance turned the story upside down. There’s no freaking way if Sally was that good she would stay stuck in that ratty little club. Max Reinhardt would have sent a limousine.
But Liza is breathtaking to watch perform, so it’s still a treat even if it makes no sense.
