Oscars 2011 Update: Best Makeup Shortlist

Oh boy. A third one for today.

The Academy has announced that 7 films have been shortlisted for Best Makeup. They are:

  • Albert Nobbs
  • Anonymous

  • Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2
  • Hugo
  • The Iron Lady

And the world breathes a collective sigh of relief as J. Edgar is not included. (more…)

The 2012 Film Release Calendar (Films Without Release Dates)

This is more like — films without official release dates.

I used to call it “The Rest Of,” but, that was last year, and last year I wasn’t really on top of my shit the way I am now. Last year, it was like, “What films are scheduled, then what films do I definitely know are coming out because I’m excited for them?” I limited that second list to 30! That was dumb. I missed shit like J. Edgar. So what I did this year was — real searching.

This year, I have a shitload of films that are either filming, in post-production, or are completed. Or are guaranteed to come out, because they always come out (looking at you, Paranormal Activity…). That’s the upside. The downside? There are lots of them. Like, a lot a lot.

I tried to put the ones that seem like they’re gonna go in certain months in those articles (and actually, I’ll probably do some more as I write them up, which won’t make any difference to you, since I’m doing this all well in advance, and everything will be finalized by the time this gets posted. Not that you needed to know that, but sometimes the man behind the curtain likes to have some fun. Just don’t interrupt his special alone time). (more…)

Oscars 2011 Update: Directors Guild Nominations

Now this — this is interesting.

Big day today. Next biggest thing to predicting the Oscars to the PGA nominations/winners are the DGA nominations/winners. When the DGA nominates directors, you can be damn sure Oscar will nominate at least four of them (unless the fifth director is Christopher Nolan).

So without any ado, here are the Directors Guild nominees for Best Director:

  • Woody Allen, Midnight in Paris
  • David Fincher, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
  • Michel Hazanavicius, The Artist
  • Alexander Payne, The Descendants
  • Martin Scorsese, Hugo (more…)

Pic of the Day: “This song of the Man and his Wife is of no place and every place; you might hear it anywhere, at any time.”

Oscars 2011 Update: Visual Effects Society Nominations

The lesser of the two sets of nominations that were announced today. I’m leading with this one simply because when I post the next one, people will forget about this one entirely.

Today they announced the nominations for the Visual Effects Society. This doesn’t really help enlighten the Best Visual Effects category at the Oscars, since there already is a shortlist of 10 nominees, and really at this point it comes down to what’s going to win, since we have a general idea of what’ll be nominated. There are still some surprises, but generally, these aren’t that important.

First, we have the Outstanding Visual Effects in a Visual Effects-Driven Feature Motion Picture category. Ya follow? Don’t worry, you will when you see the nominees:

  • Captain America: The First Avenger
  • Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2
  • Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides
  • Rise of the Planet of the Apes
  • Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (more…)
