Talk about a departure from Disney. Holy shit. This is, without a shadow of a doubt, the single biggest outlier in the entire Disney catalogue. It’s kind of like they wanted to make Lord of the Rings, but couldn’t get the rights (since apparently based on the track record, United Artists and Rankin and Bass had them), so they went and made this instead. But holy shit – this is dark. This is actually Lord of the Rings without being Lord of the Rings.
This is also the only Disney movie without any songs. Not one. All the others have at least one song. But aside from that — it’s — it’s an interesting film. Not particularly good, and clearly the result of some heavy fingers in the editing room (you’ll see in the trivia a bunch of scenes were cut out). The whole thing has a disjointed feel, which only adds to making the finished product even stranger. It’s so not Disney. So, I like it and respect it for that reason, but it’s still not a particularly great film. It is fascinating, though.
