Oscars 2012 Category Breakdown: Best Original Screenplay & Best Adapted Screenplay

Continuing my breakdown of all the Oscar categories, today we move to the Screenplay categories.

They’re pretty self-explanatory. Original and Adapted. I said yesterday that I think one of them is deceptively simple and the other is deceptively complex, and I’m not really sure which is which.

There’s not much to say about them — typically the Best Picture winner will win one of them (typically. Not always). It’s only happened 31 times that a Best Picture hasn’t won a Screenplay Oscar. So, with that, let’s get into the categories.

Just so we’re clear, the what I do here is go over each category’s history, talk about this year’s category, then rank what I think the chances of each nominee winning are.
