We continue my breakdown of the Oscar categories today with Best Production Design and Best Visual Effects.
Best Production Design used to be Best Art Direction, and the name was changed this year to better address what the category is actually about — the design of the production. Either way, mostly it’s talking about the sets and the look of the film, physically (not like, the lighting and framing and such). Locations, sets, etc. Everything that’s not on the actors themselves (costumes and makeup, etc).
Best Visual Effects basically means Best CGI nowadays. That’s an easy category to gauge every year.
So we’ll start with Production Design and then move to Visual Effects. I’ll list all the winners and nominees of the categories, all-time, and then list this year’s nominees and rank the likelihood of them winning (according to me). (more…)
