The Story of a Screenwriter: Script 3

Okay, to catch up on all this mustard, yesterday we talked about Today. And today we’re going to talk about Yesterday.

Yesterday’s script, Today, was the one with the guy and the girl where nothing happened – that one.

This was a sequel to the first one. The title is terrible. I know. So, this one, I actually liked the conceit of. In fact, afterward, when I stripped the scripts down for parts, I actually ended up keeping this one almost fully in tact. I mean, the first half of the script is for shit, mostly because my only concern with it was getting to the second half. It’s like when you watch a Michael Bay movie and you can tell that all the stuff at the beginning is just filler that had no effort put into it and only exists to get to the badass action sequences. That’s what this was. I wrote the first half of the script to get to an entire 60-page conversation.

If you look at it purely on development of skill, this is really where the dialogue starts getting better. Those last sixty pages are pretty well done. They’re not great, and it shows, but it’s definitely the best step in the right direction I’d made at this point. Which is why the script still exists.

Though it must be made clear that it only exists as a relic, like, “Hey, I know this isn’t good, but it’s almost good. Look, this is me almost getting it right.” (more…)

Pic of the Day: “We live in the trenches out there. We fight. We try not to be killed, but sometimes we are. That’s all.”
