ADG announced their nominations this morning. This would be for the corresponding category of Best Production Design, which I feel is a more encapsulating term than Art Direction, even though I grew up with this category being called Art Direction.
I also feel like I make this known every time this category comes up — I love it. I love Production Design, because it’s a very tactile category. I love thinking about all the thought that went into things that are on shelves, and the type of wallpaper they chose to make the set feel more real.
Anyway, here are your nominees for the ADG Awards: (more…)
The PGA announced their nominations this morning. The PGA has been the largest prognosticator in knowing where the preferences for Best Picture lay within the majority of the Academy. The winner of the PGA goes on something like 75% of the time to win Best Picture (and has been the same every year for the last eight years).
But that’s not what we need to talk about now. We need to talk about nominations. Typically the PGA matches up at least 90% to what the Oscar nominees are. Last year was 7 of 8, and most years it’s 8 of 9 or 8/9 of 10, depending on how many nominees there are.
This year, there’s such a strong field, I’m more interested in which way they went, because I’m figuring they’re gonna mostly be in line with what I’m feeling, and I think they’re gonna have some cool shit on there.

Every January, I preview all the films that are scheduled to come out for that year. I go through the existing release calendar, month by month, and guess how much or how little I’m going to like each of the films.
The major benefit is that it allows me, come the end of the year, to see which movies ended up surprising me for better or for worse, or which ones I had wildly disproportionate expectations for. It also gives me a chance to know what’s coming out and what to look forward to.
I also take all the films that are filming or in post and theoretically able to come out that year and preview those too, along with all the films from the previous year(s) that have yet to come out that I’ve been tracking. In all, I end up previewing more films than pretty much anyone else, I’ve been told. (more…)
