VES announced their nominees today too. Which is both good and bad. Good, because another guild announced before nominations and that can help, and bad because they have a fuck ton of categories.
23 categories. That’s a lot to wade through. And since we’re only really dealing with the film ones, I’m skipping all the TV and extraneous categories entirely this year. Oscar nominations are tomorrow, I want to focus on that.

The last major guild we were waiting for has announced. It’s DGA time.
Typically, the DGA matches the Oscars four out of five. This year, they theoretically could go five out of five.
Nothing seemed overly surprising with their choices. There was only one moderately surprising entry, but even that was a film that’s looking to be a major player. So really it’s just gonna be about figuring what could knock any of these nominees off the final list.

Oscar nominations are announced Thursday morning. Leading up to them, I have the same process every year. I start with a subjective article, follow it up with an objective article, and then we get the truth. Today is the subjective article: what I would nominate in every category if I got to nominate everything. Tomorrow is what I think is actually going to be nominated, personal choices aside. And then the nominations are announced and we’re left with what is.
Dealing with today’s article — it’s pretty self explanatory. In a perfect world, based on the almost 350 movies I saw this year, this is what I’d nominate. I’m not gonna go too much in depth on this, because to me, I’d rather spend time thinking about what’s gonna get nominated. Mostly I’m just gonna let the nominees speak for themselves.

Pic of the Day: “Ben, what are you doing?” “Well, I would say that I’m just drifting. Here in the pool.” “Why?” “Well, it’s very comfortable just to drift here.” “Have you thought about graduate school?” “No.” “Would you mind telling me then what those four years of college were for? What was the point of all that hard work?” “You got me.”
CAS has announced their nominations. They’re the guild for Sound Mixing. Meaning the entire sound mix, not just the compiling of sound effects and such.
This is one of three guild nominees today, and is the easiest of the three to talk about, so let’s just get into it.
